INQ - Factions 02, The Midians

During World War 2, Hitler ordered the commencement of Nazi eugenic programmes. These racially-based social policies seeked improvement of race through eugenics and the elimination of those defined 'unworthy of life'. Thousands were killed as a result of these purges.

Amidst these, a top secret Nazi programme was carried out, known only to Hitler and several of his closest aides. Highly classified research from Ahnenerbe, a Nazi think tank, had managed to trace the bloodlines of several Aryan families to within Germany and Austria. This was immediately made known to Hitler, who then ordered his personal SS guard, the LSSAH (Liebstandarte SS Adolf Hitler) to find these individuals. They were then to be relocated to a remote self-sufficient village hidden in the mountains of Austria, and await further orders. Those who refused to comply were threatened with force, but strict orders for the LSSAH prevented them from use of lethal force. All 106 individuals were rounded up and relocated to the remote village, after which Hitler ordered a brigade of the LSSAH to protect the village, and maintain it's secrecy. As the war took a turn for the worse, Hitler was forced to withdraw the brigade in support of his offensives, leaving behind a platoon to continue the task of protection and secrecy.

Hitler believed that only the 'pure' should be allowed to rule. He desired to create a master race of people with Aryan origins, to take over his reich when he should die.

The war ultimatelly ended in Germany's defeat, however, and Hitler committed suicide inside his bunker. The Allies swept across Germany, signalling the fall of Nazism. Deep in the mountains, the remote village recieved no news of her nation's defeat, with their communications severed by intense Allied bombing campaigns. Their first clue came when a child spotted a plane flying overhead, which the LSSAH later identified as an Allied scout plane. For Allied aircraft to fly so deep into their territory, the LSSAH platoon knew something was wrong. Scouts were sent out to the nearest towns to seek out information possible. Only one of the scouts returned, and he bore with him news of their defeat, and of the impending Allied sweeps into their area. The LSSAH immediately informed the Aryans to pack up as much as possible, and to be ready to move as soon as possible. The LSSAH sent out a small advance force, to ensure the safety of the area, and also to locate a local SS agent, who would link them to the ODESSA network. ODESSA would then be able to extract them to a safe region, where they could continue protecting Hitler's ideals.

The LSSAH and the Aryans managed to leave the village, and make significant progress without Allied intervention. Finding the SS agent took longer than expected, forcing them to camp in the woods, as the Allies concentrated on the cities. 10 days later, they established contact with the agent, and he immediately contacted ODESSA. They were then told to rendezvous at the Swiss border, and were given instructions on how to travel there, and how to avoid Allied patrols. The extraction went on with almost no incident, ODESSA having already bribed numerous officials and people to allow them free passage over remote passes and checkpoints. When they reached the rendezvous point, they were greeted by an ODESSA agent, who informed them that an area in the Swiss mountains had been prepared for their arrival, and there they would stay indefinitely. Their cover would be that of displaced Swiss families who were stuck in Austria during the war, and several senior Swiss government officials sympathetic to the Nazi had already been bribed to maintain secrecy. The Aryans and the LSSAH moved into their new homes, where they would stay for the next 2 decades.

There, the Aryans lived a peaceful life, and gave birth to a new generation of Aryans. They soon began noticing, however, that their children were exhibiting abilities beyond human capabilities. They were running faster, stronger, and showed intelligence beyond their age. And with these new abilities, came new ambitions; they now desired to leave the village and see the outside world. The LSSAH opposed this, having been watching their growth with suspicion, and threatened to kill any of them who refused to comply. The Aryans complied initially, in fear of the methods employed by the SS in the past. Distrust started building, the LSSAH suspected the Aryans of plotting to overthrow them, using their new-found abilities to their advantage. Their treatment of the Aryans steadily grew worse. The breaking point came when the LSSAH arrested an Aryan youth, under suspicion that he planned to sneak out of the village. This infuriated the Aryans, who were not informed about the incident till later on. They approached the LSSAH, and demanded the release of the youth, which was flatly refused. Further demands saw 5 Aryans get arrested, under charges of conspiracy. Infuriated, the Aryans formulated a plan to release their brethren, and to eliminate the LSSAH. Their abilities gave them an immense advantage, and the plan went off without a hitch. By the end of the night, all the members of the LSSAH had been murdered.

Now free to roam, many of the younger Aryans decided to move out of the village, the elderly choosing to stay behind. Before they left, however, they all agreed on one condition; they were to keep their heritage and the full extent of their abilities a secret. Should the world find out about who they actually were, they would all most definitely be arrested, or worse.

Years passed, and out in the world, the Aryans flourished. Through wise and conspicous use of the abilities, they quickly advanced through any field they chose. By the end of the 20th century, Aryans consisted of almost a quarter of the world's top scientists, atheletes, businessmen, politicians e.t.c.

The start of the 21st century was ominous at best. Several unstable countries were engulfed in full blown civil war, and tensions across the Middle East and Asia were growing. The oil problem was looming on the horizon, and the economy starting showing signs of a decline after years of rapid growth. Global warming was also taking it's toll, yet no one was paying any attention to it, must to the benign of environmental activists. All these events took key precedence during a secret Aryan dialogue, attended by almost all Aryans, with the purpose of discussing their role in the century to come. After much discussion, they realized that all of them shared a common belief; humans were unable to rule themselves, and required a strong leader to keep them in line. They saw themselves as that leader, and thus gave themselve a new goal, to hold all key positions in the global scene, and then manipulate humanity, for their own good.

However, an unforseen factor would render those goals invalid. Inquisition broke out among the general populace, highly contagious and lethal, no cure or vaccine existed for it. Although measures for pandemic control were active and rapidly put in place, the virus proved too contagious to effectively control. Everyday, new reports of outbreaks came, and quarantine efforts proved futile to control the spread. It is also believed that terrorists actively promoted the spread of the virus, with attempts such as leaking it into water supplies and food stores, or even by smuggling active carriers into virus-free areas. Even the mighty Aryans were susceptible to Inquisition. Within a year, every continent on Earth had outbreaks of Inquistition occuring.

The outbreak also eventually caused World War 3, and soon the entire world was engulfed in the flames of war. The Aryans then realized that they had implemented their plans too late, the world had spiralled out of control before they were able to stop it. Rumours had also spread among their numbers, that a rogue Aryan scientist had been responsible for the development of Inquisition. A team was organized to locate his secret laboratory, which was found hidden in the wilderness of South Africa. Inside, they found his corpse, apparently killed by his own virus. The laboratory had been ransacked, all research documents, equipment and samples had been removed. However, their persistence eventually led them to find a hard disk, damaged, but still operational. Investigation of it contents confirmed what they all suspected; that the virus had been a product of one of their own. Till that point, every Aryan had worked together towards their one goal, utmost belief and trust in one another was mutual. This was the first time one of their kind had worked against his own people for his own goals. Although minor then, this event would in the future cause the split in the Aryan faction that led the the formation of the Echelon.

Convinced that they could no longer help the world in it's current state, the Aryans resolved to hide, surviving for the future when they would lead what remained of humanity. They also decided to rename themselves. Being Aryan had always signified purity of descent, but an Aryan was still considered a human. They saw themselves as greater than men, but lesser than god, thus being the median. They adopted 'Midian' as their new title, discarding all relations to what they saw as lesser beings.

The Midians then implemented a plan involving three stages. Firstly, they would all abandon any and all interests in the current world. Next, they would all move into the Eagle's Nest, a fortified castle-like structure, their gathering point deep in the mountains of the United States. Lastly, they would hold out for an indetermined period of time, until when they decided the time was perfect for them to come out and reveal themselves to the world.

The first phase was achieved by using the chaos of the period to mask their disappearances. With war raging around the globe, and Inquisition spreading wildly, the chaos made it easy for them to hide their trails. What proved hardest for the Midians was abandoning the village deep in the Swiss mountains, their origin point of sorts. Many of the elderly Midians resided there, and it caused them deep sadness to have to leave their homes.

Nuclear war began just before the last few of their numbers entered the Eagle's Nest. Situated deep within the mountains, the Eagle's Nest was originally a novelty tourist resort and theme park, owned by a rich Midian businessman. Unknown to the tourists who visited it, the castle was actually heavily fortified, the huge walls being more than just realistic replicas. Beneath the castle existed a subterranean complex, inside which housed everything necessary for a large amount of people to survive for a long period of time. When the Midian businessman offered his castle for their collective use, the Midians knew it was the logical choice. Stockpiles of food, water, and everything else neccesary for survival were brought there, in preparation for what was to come.

During the years of the nuclear winters, the Midians, safe within the walls of their great fortress, Burg Neuhohenzollern, set about organizing themselves to prepare for the struggles ahead. Their first order of business was to establish a structure of Houses, defined by ancient Aryan bloodlines. The first 5 major bloodlines to be established were :

House Friedrich - Descendants are known to be great warriors and soldiers.
House Wilhelm - Descendants are accomplished athletes and sportsmen.
House Ludwig - Descendants are talented psychics.
House Maximillian - Descendants are gifted artisans.
House Ferdinand - Descendants are brilliant scientists.

Each House then elected a leader, which was generally the most senior Midian of the House (Midian society places a high value on seniority), and these 5 Heads of the Houses formed the Midian High Office.
